Days to Maturity: 70 from direct sow
AAS Winner 2009
When it's time for a gourmet treat, rely on this super-quick, very unusual Piel de Sapo (Christmas) melon. Fragrant and sweet, it is a delight straight from the vine or chilled to perfection. We are proud to offer this All America Selection to our gardening friends this season.
This melon has a golden rind mottled with green. The Piel de Sapo type of melon, very popular in Spain, translates (unfortunately) to Toadskin, but that's just how it looks. Nothing compares with the aromatic, succulent-sweet and juicy flesh, which has the look of a honeydew with a honey-sweet flavor.
Lambkin is an exciting new hybrid, maturing much more quickly than other Piel de Sapo types and holding very, very well before or after picking. If giant melon harvests have left you begging friends and neighbors to accept a sack of leftovers, this is the one to try.
The fruit reaches 2 to 4 pounds, oval and attractive. The flesh is pure white, and these melons just keep coming on vigorous vines 10 inches high and 6 feet or more wide. A great variety the whole family will love.
